What Has Google Been Up To?

One of the reasons that we love Google so much is that they are constantly adding new features and improving their product. It can be tough to keep up with everything that Google is working on so every once in awhile we like to do a quick blog post about the latest and greatest. Enjoy!

When you do a search on Google, you may have noticed that when the search results appear, things are looking different. You are right. One addition to the search results is a band of sponsored ads – now called Google Shopping. (So, if you searched for DVD players you will see a box of various retailers with their ads, websites, etc.) If you click on the link for Google shopping, you are actually taken to a new window in which you can browse the products. This of course is a big change for retailers and those businesses should be using this feature as part of their adwords strategy.

You may also notice that depending on what you search for, you may see a band of product ads running across the top above your search results. (Give it a try. Search for children’s books and see the beautiful string of books that run across the top.)

Basically Google has cleaned up the way that the actual search results are presented to create more room for ads. So, should you be concerned about how your business is showing up in search results? Well, the word on the street is that all of the changes happening on Google are downplaying the importance of organic searching. Those businesses focusing on creating and serving up ads on Google are getting more attention. Just something to keep in mind as we move forward into the New Year.

One other crazy thing that Google is working on (that really has nothing to do with search engine stuff) is something called Google Glasses. They are really something out of the future. They are still in test mode but basically you wear a pair of special glasses (think Star Trek looking) that would take the place of your smart phone. You can do anything that you would do now with your iPhone but it is faster and easier. Check out this article from this week on Business Insider for a picture.  What will Google think of next?

Coming up next week we are going to do a quick rundown of marketing lingo.
