Facebook and Twitter Ads: Pros and Cons

As you’ve undoubtedly noticed, ads are popping up on all of your social media feeds these days. This has led several of our clients to ask us about the wisdom of doing Facebook and Twitter ads versus Google AdWords ads. Here are our thoughts on the matter.

Facebook and Twitter Ads

Pros

  • When you run an ad on Facebook, you are basically paying for “likes.” (Similarly, on Twitter you are paying for followers.) For new businesses, we often use Facebook and Twitter ads just to establish a baseline following. Our general goal is to get at least 100 followers on both platforms.facebook and twitter ads
  • Facebook ads can be great for specific promotions. For instance, we did a free A/C giveaway for an HVAC company. The goal here was, again, to get more followers, not sales. Then once you have the followers, you can do things like post blogs and other links to your website that will encourage further engagement and keep your company top of mind.

Cons

  • As a general rule, Facebook ads are going to cost much more than ads on Google. (This can vary depending on the amount of competition and your industry, but it’s a safe bet.)
  • You are paying for clicks, not for sales. And the people who click on/like your page are not necessarily checking out your website. We believe that the best online strategies push more traffic to your site.
  • In the long run, it is better to focus on getting leads/sales. That is why we are big fans of Google. You are targeting potential new clients and getting them to engage with your website rather than just your Facebook page.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with doing both Facebook and Twitter ads and Google ads. But keep in mind that you will get more bang for your buck on Google.
