Get Endorsed. And Endorse Others.

We are always happy to write blog posts about topics that are submitted to us by our clients. The new feature that seems to be creating a lot of buzz these days is endorsements on LinkedIn. If you are a LinkedIn user you are probably aware of recommendations – an avenue for people to write a quick, personal recommendation about you, your skills or your business. Now you have the option to do endorsements. Think of endorsements as a one-click recommendation. You see, everyone has the option to list their skills on their LinkedIn profile (which you should absolutely use) and now people can check or “endorse” that they have seen those skills in action!

So, should you be giving endorsements? Is it ok that you are receiving endorsements? Our short answer is yes. And yes.

There are a few things to think about before jumping in. Make sure that your skill list is accurate and up-to-date. That is what people are going to select when they endorse you so make sure that if you have something listed that it is relevant.

Once you have your skills listed, you may start receiving endorsements without having to do anything because people are very excited to start using this new tool! As you begin to build endorsements make sure you review them. You do have the option (just like with recommendations) to block the endorsements – keep those endorsements that are good for your profile. Then it is your turn to return the favor! Part of the fun of the endorsements tool is that you can endorse others as well.

If you are still unsure about whether or not to spend your time on this new feature you should realize that potential employers, partners, etc. may be looking at the number of endorsements that you have. In this case, more is better. As of right now LinkedIn does not allow for people to search the LinkedIn database based on endorsements but a lot of people agree that that will be coming before too long. When it comes to LinkedIn you want to make sure that your profile is “complete” and that means using the new tools as they become available. And we like this tool – it is easy and quick to use.

If you really want to grow your endorsements you may need to think about growing your connections. You see only people who are free degree connections can endorse you. More connections could certainly lead to more endorsements. Think about setting aside some time every week to building and improving your online profile on LinkedIn – we think it is well worth your time.

This will be the last post of 2012 for our blog! Check us out in the New Year!
