Memorial Day is Much More Than a Day Off

For some of us, Memorial Day is merely a three-day celebration marking the unofficial start to summer. Long-weekend getaways are plotted and planned, parties are thrown and the pool season makes waves as school and work is canceled.

But for others, Memorial Day is a day to honor the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. The Fallen are celebrated with parades of military personnel and members of veterans’ organizations; and by friends, family and comrades who visit cemeteries and memorials.

Whatever your celebratory conviction, consider a moment of silence during your day and contemplate life without the sacrifices made by others. Not so ironically, according to The History Channel, Congress passed legislation in 2000 encouraging all Americans to pause for a National Moment of Remembrance at 3 p.m. local time. Perhaps you honor the day by adorning the front of your home with an American flag. As the ritual goes, the flag should be hung at half-staff until noon and then raised to the top of the staff; once night falls, the flag should be illuminated. Simple gestures go a long way.

Happy Memorial Day to those who have served, and endless thanks to those who sacrificed their dreams to ensure their country’s safety.
