Understanding the Ingredients of Alphabet Soup: SEM vs. SEO

Search Engine Marketing (SEM). It’s the scientific formula behind online business positioning. You have a product or service and a website to share with future customers, and when you factor in premium placement of search results, you arrive at website visitors.

How SEM Works

You’ve seen SEM in action (even if you don’t realize it) – the top two to three search results marked with the precursor “ad.” This small, but mighty delineation has ginormous advantages. If your site is within the top results, chances are good it will be selected – majority of online-lookers click only on the first few results generated from their search. Increase your chances even more by specifying the city, state, county and even country, where you want the ad to appear. And SEM is an affordable way for businesses of all sizes to operate – you pay only for the ad space when it’s clicked on.

SEM vs. SEO

Don’t confuse SEM with Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Though the terms are used interchangeably, it’s important to know they aren’t identical. SEM has its roots in the line-up of sites via organic search engines results and advertising, while SEO marketing primitively predicts search terms used by online visitors to drive SEM results.
